Bresee Bank Financial Literacy Program

Awardee: Bresee Foundation
Partner: Mary G. Keipp, Office of Instructional Development

Abstract:

In partnership with UCLA's Community Based Learning Program, the Bresee Foundation is implementing the Bresee Bank Financial Literacy Program, in order to provide youth (11-18 years of age) with the resources, education, and technical skills so that they are prepared for their future as an adult. Building on Bresee's existing Educational Incentive System (EIS), the financial literacy program will supplement existing educational incentives and will provide a more applicable understanding of financial literacy as it applies to the youth directly.

Bresee's Educational Incentive System (EIS) is a "mock" banking and credit program that provides incentive for youth to participate in our educational activities and improve their grades, attendance records, and disciplinary records. Working with the EIS system, the proposed Bresee Bank Financial Literacy Program will engage youth in interactive financial training sessions. Students will discuss earning, spending, borrowing, saving and investing as it relates to their immediate needs at the Bresee Youth Center and as it applies to their understanding of financial literacy for their future. Therefore, the Bresee Bank Financial Literacy Program will augment the existing incentive system and enhance the student's understanding of real-life implementations of financial literacy.
