CDTech-NAID Center Small Business Assistance Project

Awardee: Community Development Technologies Center
Partner: Prof. Leobardo Estrada, School of Public Policy & Social Research

Abstract:

This project is a collaborative effort between the Community Development Technologies Center (CDTech) and the North American Integration and Development Center (NAID), a research unit of UCLA's School of Public Policy and Social Research. The mission of the CDTech-NAID Center Small Business Assistance Project will be to combine sector-based and neighborhood-based approaches to support small businesses in Los Angeles. The specific goals of the project are to:

  1. Strengthen the capacity of business entrepreneurs.
  2. Grow companies.
  3. Expand job opportunities for low-income communities

This will be accomplished by combining the knowledge and experience of both CDTech and the NAID Center staff and students to deliver technical support and guidance to local merchants. The project deliverables will be two web sites, one improved and the other new, to facilitate e-commerce; an inventory of Los Angeles and Mexican toy and food manufacturing associations and retail and discount chains; an inventory of associations and merchants involved in CDTech programs; and, an improved computer basics training program. These activities meet the Center for Community Partnerships' goal to address issues in the broad area of economic development.
