LEAMOS! por Computadora – Pre-ESL Literacy for Spanish Speakers

Awardee: Centro Latino de Educacion Popular
Partner: Dr. Concepcion Valadez, Graduate School
of Education and Information Studies

Abstract:

Founded in 1991, Centro Latino's mission is to offer educational opportunities to those without access to other educational resources to foster their self-confidence, open doors to new opportunities, and help them achieve their goals. We are pleased to submit this request for funding and partnership expansion, with the support of our long-time evaluator and mentor, Dr. Concepción Valadez of the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. At this time, we seek to involve UCLA more fully in the pilot launch of our new pre-ESL literacy program for Spanish speakers called ¡LEAMOS! por Computadora (also known as ¡LEAMOS! PC). Specifically, we are proposing to:

  1. 1. Hire a full-time UCLA graduate student for the summer to assist with:
    (a) beta testing ¡LEAMOS! por Computadora, and
    (b) launching the first pilot implementation at 20 community sites.
  2. Work with Dr. Valadez to design and begin implementation of the program-wide evaluation of the project.
  3. Pursue other potential partnerships with UCLA, such as possible hosting of the ¡LEAMOS! por Computadora site on a UCLA server and accessing technical expertise to assist with large-scale project expansion and on-going program improvements.

More information and a link to the demonstration version of the program are available at www.leamos.org.
