CIS Gang Youth Tutor/Mentoring Project

Abstract:
The UCLA/CIS Gang Youth Tutor/Mentor Project is designed to bring out the great energies and talents of UCLA students and apply those critically needed skills to help resolve the epidemic of youth and gang violence in Los Angeles.
CIS believes every youth needs and deserves:
- A one-to-one relationship with a caring adult
- A safe place to learn and grow
- A healthy start and a healthy future
- A marketable skill to use upon graduation
- A chance to give back to peers and community
This project will help fulfill needs 1, 2 and 5 by blending the resources of UCLA and the expertise that CIS has gained over thirteen years to maximize the positive impact this energy and knowledge can have on gangs, their members, their families and the community.
Project Goals:
Build capacity of Gang Tutor/Mentor Training Certification Curriculum Recruit 10 UCLA graduate/upper division students as mentor/tutors for acute cases, working closely with CIS case managers
Project Deliverables:
Expanded Gang Tutor/Mentor Training Certification Curriculum Video of activities/accomplishments/milestones Academic Credit for student fieldwork in conjunction with a UCLA 2 quarter course
An evaluation report based on action research
