Abstract:
Esperanza Community Housing Corporation, a nonprofit community and economic development organization working in the Maple/Adams-Hoover/Adams neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, is building upon the successful development of a Distressed Neighborhood Database- a database to research neighborhood health and housing conditions. The DND was developed within the community with assistance from a UCLA Urban Planning graduate student through an award from the UCLA in LA Community Partnerships. The Community Ownership of the Distressed Neighborhood Database: Implementation and Integration Project will result in the training ten existing neighborhood-based Community Health Promoters with the skills necessary to extract, analyze and present the data contained in the Distressed Neighborhood Database, with full integration and ownership of the training curriculum by the Community Health Promoters in order to develop the skills to train other community leaders in the use, planning and research applications of the database as it relates to issues in distressed communities including community outreach and policy initiatives. Although our community faces many challenges, the assets of the neighborhood include strong community networks, diverse cultural and artistic traditions, community spirit and leadership, entrepreneurial aspirations, and the determination to improve conditions for all - assets upon which the proposed program is built.
