Abstract:
L.A. Commons' 2004 Chinatown Project is a year-long cultural inquiry into the unique place of Los Angeles' first Asian immigrant community in the fabric of the larger city. Intense redevelopment in the area, spurred by an influx of art galleries and artists, and the efforts of the Chinatown Business Improvement District, necessitates this examination which will involve a broad cross-section of those living and working in Chinatown.
Young and old, Chinese and non-Chinese will together conceptualize and produce artworks for exhibition at the Metro Gold Line Station, Central Plaza and the exterior of the Chinatown Library. These installations will not only memorialize the collective inquiry, but will provide the Chinatown community, as well as visitors, with a window into the complex history and character of the neighborhood.
Our partner, Professor Shirley Hune of the UCLA Department of Urban Planning, studies the ways that Asian immigrant communities define and redefine their place in dynamic urban contexts. Her research provides the framework for the community-wide dialogue to answer the question: how will the redevelopment of Chinatown impact the role that it has played since the 19th century in the lives of Chinese immigrants as a social, cultural, commercial and residential hub?
