and CAST
| Awardee: | Victoria Marks, Professor and |
| Partner: | Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST) |
Abstract:
Professor Victoria Marks and Dr. Kenneth Chuang will join with CAST, a non-profit provider for trafficking survivors, to offer a new upper division/graduate level seminar through the UCLA/WAC. The course will consist of two quarters that will educate WAC graduate students on human trafficking issues and utilize their skills for a community service project that benefits trafficking survivors.
In the first quarter, each student will receive comprehensive instruction on human trafficking, in the context of such problems as migration and forced labor, the globalization of developing economies, the HIV pandemic, and the recent Tsunami disaster. Specialized instruction will focus on using the arts for social activism, and CAST will provide training to the students to prepare them for working with trafficking survivors.
Each student will utilize the second quarter to develop and implement a novel program that provides CAST's clients with an arts experience, drawing upon the student's expertise in dance, spoken word or theater arts. The course concludes with a forum for community partners and the UCLA community, highlighting the CAST/UCLA partnership and stimulating interest in other potential collaborations.
