Abstract:
The Museum of Tolerance is partnering with UCLA Center X Teacher Education Program (TEP) to train 20-25 graduate students who are preparing to become teachers to act as Museum ambassadors to LA schools, bridging the dynamic learning methods and resources of Museums to under-served classrooms and communities. They will invite the students and teachers to participate and initiate them into the unique educational enrichment opportunities and lifelong learning benefits made possible through Museums.
This project will focus primarily on Local District 7 elementary schools. With training provided by the Museum of Tolerance in youth facilitation skills, anti-bias education and positive youth development, and academic support from UCLA faculty members, the teacher candidates will create and deliver thematic, academic standards-aligned model activities in classrooms and community settings. The goal is to inspire under-served school children and their teachers and parents to enjoy the multi-faceted opportunities offered by local LA Museums. The anticipated outcomes include greater access for disadvantaged youths and their families to free Museum programs and services; increased participant appreciation of the values of independent thinking and informal learning; and improved culturally responsive museum outreach strategies.
