Abstract:

The proposed study will extend the scope of the Peer-to-Peer Technical Assistance Nutrition Initiative (PPTANI) and conduct an evaluation of a randomized controlled pilot test of the initiative. The PPTANI is a one-year pilot project, funded by the California Endowment, to improve knowledge about healthy foods and reduce barriers to accessing nutrition resources among 75 low-income families and homeless women and children transitioning to permanent or temporary housing in South Los Angeles.

The first aim of the proposed project will be to extend the PPTANI to additional participants and conduct a randomized controlled pilot test of the initiative in order to assess the impact of the intervention on knowledge of healthy foods, dietary patterns, and exercise behaviors. A second aim of the study is to identify and provide information on neighborhood resources (e.g. markets, Farmers Markets, and parks) available to participants in the PPTANI. The third aim is to evaluate the training of the PPTANI peer nutrition counselors and disseminate their healthy eating and recipe pamphlet for use by other low income and homeless families. The dissemination will occur through churches and community centers.
