Abstract:

Make Art/Stop AIDS is a four-month collaborative initiative organized by the UCLA Fowler Museum and the Department of World Arts and Cultures in conjunction with a group of international scholars, artists, LAUSD teachers, parents and students, Los Angeles-based community partner Artists for a New South Africa, and other social agencies fighting against AIDS. The Teen AIDS Awareness and Action program is one of five of its primary components. It will engage 10th grade students in becoming informed and proactive AIDS awareness advocates via a two-year peer-to-peer education and arts program. Its goal is to reduce the rate of infection among at-risk youth in under-served communities of our city.

The first aim of the proposed project will be to extend the PPTANI to additional participants and conduct a randomized controlled pilot test of the initiative in order to assess the impact of the intervention on knowledge of healthy foods, dietary patterns, and exercise behaviors. A second aim of the study is to identify and provide information on neighborhood resources (e.g. markets, Farmers Markets, and parks) available to participants in the PPTANI. The third aim is to evaluate the training of the PPTANI peer nutrition counselors and disseminate their healthy eating and recipe pamphlet for use by other low income and homeless families. The dissemination will occur through churches and community centers.
