Abstract:
The proposed project is "Phase II" of the "Museum Ambassadors" partnership that began last year between the Museum of Tolerance and Center X Teacher Education Program. In "Phase I," 22 Center X student teachers (under the supervision of Faculty Advisor Nancy Parachini) created culturally responsive classroom curriculum and outreach strategies to twelve South Los Angeles elementary schools. This year, 9 of the 22 Interns will remain with the project to compile the lesson plans and create a hard-copy resource and web guide that address major topics and themes in human relations that teachers are struggling to understand and interpret on their own.
The new "Handbook" will provide specialized support and resources in multicultural, social justice and anti-bias education. As a result of this project, educators will get answers to questions they have re. how to address sensitive issues like alternative families, complex identities, immigration and bullying. The resource will outline innovative ways to connect human relations content and objectives to standards-based curriculum. Cognizant of the need not to pile on more teaching content, the project will offer practical ways to integrate culturally relevant and responsive material into every subject, every day.
