Abstract:
This project will culminate with the production of a multimedia package that captures oral history, live performances and community interaction with female jazz musicians. A mix of multigenerational, multi-ethnic artists from this genre who reside in the Los Angeles area will be invited to participate. The majority of these women will be identified through existing contacts with The Instrumental Women Project and through guests who have spoken at UCLA Women in Jazz developed and taught by Professor Cheryl Keyes. The history of women in jazz is most commonly associated with vocalists. There is a need to add to the existing, limited body of work on this topic that is readily available. It not only serves to honor and acknowledge these artists, but also, can provide inspiration for upcoming artists who might not otherwise know about this artistic force that has been largely invisible on a broad scale. Targeted groups, including students in music education programs will be introduced to these “living history” makers. Primary project partners include Cheryl L. Keyes, Ph.D. and La Quetta M. Shamblee, M.B.A.
