Abstract:
This project’s three main goals are to develop Centro Latino’s capacity to train and support others to teach literacy effectively; help Centro Latino develop as a hub of creative exchange and innovation to advance literacy among Latino immigrants; and integrate literacy practices into teacher training curruculum at UCLA. Centro Latino has historically focused on directly teaching non-literate Spanish speakers to read and write. To make literacy access more universal, they now seek to expand their capacity to train and support literate Spanish speaking friends and family members of non-literate youth and adults, as well as adult schools, libraries and other community-based organizations. The project will result in a summative evaluation of Centro Latino’s LEAMOS program; training modules and materials for tutors (family members/friends), non-literate students, children of non-literate adults; training modules and materials for trainers/teachers and assistant trainers (literacy program graduates and successful community tutors); video segments for tutors and students to address psychological and technical issues; step-by-step path into LEAMOS; telephone support protocols and tracking system; a literacy resource library; bibliography of Centro Latino’s resources; a robust system for sharing information in Spanish and English; and content related to litearacy integrated into 2-3 UCLA teacher training courses.
