Abstract:
Founded in 1904, the Children’s Bureau (CB) of Southern California is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Since the early 1990’s, CB has provided comprehensive child abuse and neglect services to the East Hollywood community via the Oakwood Family Resource Center (FRC) model. During the past year, CB FRC had the opportunity to partner with Wendelin Slusser, Assistant Clinical Professor for UCLA’s Department of Medicine which offered the Pediatric Overweight Prevention through Parent Training program to families participating in the Oakwood preschool program located in the East Hollywood community. The proposed project would integrate this education program into a sustainable service at the center via the CB Promotora Health Education Program. Community Promotoras will be trained to provide Overweight Prevention Education classes to families with young children. This educational component will be complimented by introducing a Parent and Child Together physical activity class for families to participate in. By combining these services we will address the overweight crisis in Latino families with young children living within the 90004/East Hollywood Community.
